OUR
story begins
with a river, the
Thames. In case you haven’t
noticed already, it seems to
flow absolutely everywhere
in the city. More than 200
years ago, a British chap, John
Graves Simcoe, was scouting
around for a spot to locate a
capital city for Upper Canada.
Apparently it was love at first
sight for the Lieutenant-
Governor when he saw where
the river forks at the west end
of today’s downtown core.
Well, Toronto, not London,
eventually got the nod for
Upper Canada’s capital site.
However, Simcoe had laid the
groundwork for a flourishing
town. He had chosen well.
One day his tiny community
clustered around the Forks
of the Thames would become
the city you find yourself in
today—a prominent Canadian
business, academic and
medical centre.
’Way back when, of
course, our city was supposed
to remind folks of that
other London on that other
River Thames. And even today
there are nostalgic ties. If
you’ve got time for a tour,
for instance, you can see the
sights from aboard an authentic
red double-decker bus
during the summer months.
It won’t be long before
you connect with London’s
own special character. Here’s
what you’ll discover: Today’s
city of more than 350,000
inhabitants fans out for
miles from its original site.
Still, the Forks of the Thames
remains its sentimental heart.
